I just learned that Robert Altman passed away today at the age of 81. He was one of those directors that changed cinema. He directed 87 films and television projects during his career. That is astonishing. The one moment I will never forget was when he accepted the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Oscar and he reminisced, “I’m very fortunate in my career. I’ve never had to direct a film I didn’t choose or develop. My love for filmmaking has given me an entree to the world and to the human condition.”
Fortunate yes, lucky never. That man knew how to direct and get the best out of his actors. One of my favorite Altman films was “The Player,” with Tim Robbins. Altman will always be know for bringing “M*A*S*H” to life which turned around and became a highly successful TV program that was adored by many. Thank you Robert for keeping us entertained through the years you will be missed.
