I came across this masterpiece when I was throwing out all my VHS tapes. Back in 1992, when I was in school at UNCG, my buddy, Jarod and I would head out of town to his family’s house and feel the need to get some air (about 2 inches) and throw down some baskets. The house is located in Brown Summit, NC. We’d head out there in his 1984 muddy brown Volkswagen Rabbit. This clunker had holes the size of a fist through the floorboard. I swear sometimes I thought I should’ve stuck my feet through those holes and help give it some speed. Ahh…those were the days.

This is how we created this. First of all the goal was at the most 8 feet and 6 inches high. That was still baby fat…OK the freshman 15!!

• We shot it with a VHS camcorder.
• We had two VCRs. One to play the footage the other to record it.
• We first recorded the music with just the audio RCA cables plugged in and recorded it to black.
• We would then disconnect the audio cable and connect the video RCA cable between the two VCRs, we would listen to the music on the tape and select the footage we thought would match.
• Sometimes we would slow it down to show our hops or leave it alone at normal speed to show the raw power.

Whala, we have our dunk video after 8 hours editing tape to tape and trying to get the VCR to communicate with each where we wanted it. We had to play it over and over till we got it right. This was before any software was available to consumers to edit and make videos. Hell Macs at that time couldn’t hold a more than 10 Gigs of hard drive space.
