I recently began using Final Cut Pro 5 and I have been experiencing some dropped frame issues. I'm attempting to log and capture from my miniDV camera, attached via firewire. I also have a 500 GB iomega external hard drive connected to my laptop via the usb ports. With the size of my external, it wouldn't seem memory is the issue. Is there anything I can try? I attemped rerouting the camera through the hard drive and connecting that to the computer, but FCP didn't recognize a camera deck.

Guys, I strongly suggest you all check out larry jordan's suggestions on how to set up your FCP system. You can take anything he has to say on the subject as the definitive solution. There's tons of info on folder structures on his site amongst other things.

www.larryjordan.biz

Also, you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS be using an external disk for your content. The amount of disk access required to use the software and read the content is a great way to get yourself on the highway to disk failure city - population you.

Hope this is useful.

Beau-

1) you can work off external HD. Most people store their capture scratch folder on an external HD.
2) after you reconnect all your files, open the FCP manual in the Help section and look up Media Manager.
3) In Media Manager, select copy project and use a new external HD to copy the project to.

Good Luck!

Another question is: is it a good idea to work directly from External HD via e-SATA? My MAC has crashed several times while I am working FCP, and my one friend tells me that I should bring in all the files on the computer to work, then only save out on external HD when it is finished. Should I not work directly from external HD and save out to it as I work on the project? Will it damage the laptop(MAC book Pro) or the LACIE if the computer keeps on crashing during FCP session?

Hi, I am relatively new to FCP and MAC. I had to rush a project and didn't study how to organize my files and just started to edit. Now it is utterly confusing to find files. Recently I get a message saying 'disk space full' when I try to render. So I started to move around my files, trying to organize Media/Capture/Render Files and I think I have a mess. I realize I have to spend hours to reorganize, but how can I empty my disk space and what is the best way to organize? There is Capture folder and inside it is another set of Capture/Audio/Render files and another sublayer of those three folders. I don't know how it got this way. I don't remember setting the Capture Scratch this way at all...Help!

Have you considered NVidia Mac AGP 7800GT?X, etc.
Have heard good things about the product.
In an old dual Opteron Tyan K8S2885, with PCI-x 133/64, that also has an AGP Pro slot where we recently
installed an AGP Radion 2650. .
Despite the demise of AGP, the 2650 has been on the
market only a few months. I know other users have
run Leopard on this kind of rig. We have run Windows 2003 Server.

Nat,

It has nothing to do with your internal hard drive. Your logic board is being connected through your USB 2.0 or if you have an esata express card it connects directly to your logic board and that is where the information is being accessed.

Hi,

I was just wondering, If you have a Macbook Pro with 5400 rpm internal Hard Drive, and you are using an external Hard Drive with 7200 rpm (with estata connection) as a scratch disk, will the performace suffer because of the slower rpm in the internal HD, even though you're capturing and keeping your video files in the external HD?
