When I was a kid I used to look at Memorial Day as just another holiday that we get to miss school. I used to joke that it was because of my birthday that we got off school when Memorial Day fell on my birthday, May 31st. That all changed the day my parents took my brother and I to the Vietnam War Memorial. My heart felt like it was in my throat throughout the day as I watched family members, bothers in arms find there fallen mates on the wall and weep. I will never forget the experience and appreciation I felt about the veterans that fought and died in the name of America.
This video is something I shot 10 years ago when I put together a documentary about Reva Coon, my 93 (at the time) year old grandmother. We visited The Living Memorial Sculpture Garden with her, my father who was in the Korean War, and my mother. I ran around trying to get some cut-away shots to put together for her documentary and never used the footage. I put this together for this Memorial Day.
