Short Film Friday: Man’s Best Friend?

May 11th, 2007 · 6 Comments

This was my senior project in advanced cinematography class at UNCG. I had a good working crew but none of us had any experience. This was done over 10 years ago and most if not all of the film would be different today.

I wrote, produced, and directed “Man’s Best Friend?” and shot the film on a CP-16 film camera. We also recorded the sound on a Nagra. One of those old fashion reel to reel tapes. That was a pain in the ass to record on. Had the footage developed and transfered to BetaCam SP. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who owned a local post production house. He hand picked one of his best editors and offered his services on the house.

The hardest part was to sync the footage with the reel to reel audio. We had to lay the audio tracks down on a blank tape then try to sync it up.

Idiots Note: We didn’t use a slate to mark the audio with the film, which was my fault and of course a mistake made by a new filmmaker. We pulled four consecutive all nighters, the first was to sync the film. I was pleased with the outcome as far as a student film is concerned. Looking back… I smack myself in the face, what a jerk.

Wow, what an obnoxiously funny film. Sorry ladies, this is not made to offend you, just a simple minded male version of love and the battles us guys face. I had some serious talent involved with this film and looking back I feel bad if this film offended them.

Story: I was at the opening of this movie at UNCG, and it created quite a stir. It was magnificent – all the uptight people were offended, and everyone else were laughing their butts off. It was a wonderful site to behold.

Jarod, that was hilarious I have to admit. I loved the music that you created for it. I thought that was the best thing about the film.

Can you believe it has been 10 years since? I never thought back then I was so impulsive.

-Just watched the whole thing — hilarious. And I was worried you’d think my 48 Hr Film project would be too raunchy! Yes, I stand by my first thought: as an only child — I firmly believe your film would be the perfect tutorial on what it’d be like growing up w/ a horny brother. So looking back now, what changes would you make?

That is a great question. A buddy of mine is interested in redoing this film so you might have to wait and see.

    A few things I’d do different…
    1) I don’t think it would as rude.
    2) Same concept, much different dialogue and situations.
    3) Great production team
    4) flush out the characters and maybe some animation
    5) find a great actor to play the penis

I think about it some more.

Actually, there is a lot you can do with that concept if you ever remake it. Not just on a humor level, but the honesty of body vs mind, etc. You could also have a hilarious song and dance routine where the penis and the man dance together throughout a speed-dating gathering. “Ohhhh, why…why…can’t we just skip this stepppppp…I am a successful male of breeeeding age….” The women then gather for a full chorus line. “He is a maaaaan of breeeeding age…”
