PAL Help

June 18th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I got an email that I can’t help out with. I’ve never used PAL before so I’m limited on this one but here is what Liz had to ask me…

Last summer I shot several miniDV tapes in Australia on a Sony z1ps. I’d like to log and capture some of the footage, but it is in PAL format. I have a Sony PD150 (NTSC), and a Panasonic dvx100b. I use FCP HD. Is there any way to select for preferences that will overcome the PAL divide?

Here is a shot out of the dark. Liz I believe you need to rent a PAL deck or a PAL camcorder and download the footage to FCP. As far as converting it into NTSC… I hope my readers can help you out. Or get the tape transfered to NTSC at a video house.

Your PD 150 may be switch able from Pal to NTSC. set your pd 150 to pal. Then fire wire into your FCP. set Capture Scratch to DV Pal (you may have to search for the right settings inside audio video settings or system settings.) Set up your time line as NTSC. By doing this you will encode pal video and then do the conversion inside your time line. FYI, you can mix and match NTSC with Pal video inside the same timeline.
