Props to Matthew Garrison for pointing me to this…from Apple’s website Final Cut Studio 2 updates:
New in Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 Update
* Improves overall stability, resolves issues with long filenames on non-HFS systems, includes improvements for both FxPlug plug-ins and master templates. Log and Transfer support for the AVCHD format.
WARNING
Don’t run out and buy Final Cut Pro Studio 2 because of this report. I can’t test it because I do not own a Sony HRD-SR1 or have access to a camera with AVCHD. But I do have Studio 2…so if you want to send me your camera for some tests? I promise to give it back. ![]()

Any idea on when this will be updated on Final Cut Express HD?

Chad, I have no idea when they will get to that. Do you know if they update Xpress often? Go to your apple menu on the top of your computer and select software update and see if it offers an update for FCXpress HD. That is all I can suggest at the moment.

Hello
after seeing that Final Cut had been updated, I thought of buying to myself a Sony HDR-S1, but my surprise was that the update only serves for MACs based on processors Intel, so the PPC stay out for the time being, I do not understand because only the update did in MACs Intel: (
My question is that I must do now: to hope that they should update in the PPC? or flatly to keep on using another camera with port Firewire until there he supports for the PPC
Do exist any free program for capturing AVCHD on mac whitout buy third parts software at the moment?
Forgive for my English but I use a translator on line.
Greetings

Lucky for you guys, I have Final Cut Pro 6, the new update, AND the hdr-sr1. First thing you need to know is that you will not be able to edit avchd footage natively, it has to be converted for fcp. When you plug is your sr1 (via usb), open fcp 6, then open the Log and Transfer window under the File menu. From there, you can import avchd footage from the camera, and it will convert it to quicktime using the Pro Res codec.
The video quality will be 100% perfect, but you will no longer have the 5.1 sound since it will be converted to stereo. One last important note, since the footage will be converted, the file sizes will change. If you had a 100mb avchd clip, it can increase up to 5x more when converted to quicktime. So that 100mb file will become approximately 500mb. As long as you have a large hdd, you should be ok for a while.
Anyway, the whole system for editing avchd is near perfection when it comes to fcp. The only problem is the HDD space.
Enjoy

@highdeffcp thanks for the feedback.
at 5x the file size converted into quicktime.
I was thinking of getting a 1Tb exernal drive but I am wondering if I need Firewire or the USB 2.0 would do the trick?
I have a Canon HG10 (AVCHD as well).
Thanks
