Canon HV20 Connection Problem

September 29th, 2007 · 7 Comments

I got an email from Lola, and if anyone has the solution please leave it in the comments. I do not have a Canon HV20 but I was looking at it and almost considered purchasing it. Here is the situation…

I recently purchased the Canon HV20 High Definition miniDV and I cannot get it to hook up with Final Cut pro (version 5)- however, Imovie recognizes
the camera- so I know its not the camera’s fault.

I believe all the setting are correct (1920×1080, 1080i60 format, NTSC 29.97fps, HDV firewire basic, 48 khz). In the specs it states “HDMi terminal: Type A (19pins)” does this have anything to do with the standard firewire cord (4-6pin IEEF 1394)?

I recently bought the Sony HDR-CX7, and had a similar problem trying to get FCP to recognize the camera to capture.

I opened Easy Setup under the Final Cut Pro menu and selected HDV from the pull down menu. Then everything worked perfectly. I am running FCP 6.0.1 so I can’t vouch for FCP 5, but I hope another FCP user has your answer. Good luck Lola, and if you figure it out please feel free to leave it in the comment section for other users with similar problem.

I had a similar problem with my MBP, and the solution I came up with was I was running a FW800 drive and my Canon GL-2 FW400 in the same motherboard port. The MBP freaked out, and wouldn’t recognize the Canon. I figured out if I purchased an Express Card FW800 card, I can the drive off the card and the camera off the motherboard.

So if you’re running all FW off the motherboard, look into getting cards for your machine, whether it be a Desktop or Laptop. The less you run off the motherboard, the better.

You will have to upgrade to v.6. I had the same issue with sony hdv A1J when I tried to get it to pair up with fcp 5.

Upgrading to version 6 will make the problem go away. Before you do this exhaust all options:

    Sometimes its the boot sequence:

Make sure that the camera is off. Attach the Firewire to the camera, attach the firewire to the computer. Do not start your editing program yet.

Turn on your camera and wait for the OS to recognize and load the appropriate device.

Most camcorders will not cooperate with a drive on the same card.

Thanks Andy. That tip worked for me perfectly. I didn’t have any HDV options in “Log & Capture”, but changing to the easy setup did the trick.

    Cheers! :D

I found if you have the firewire plugged into the HV20, you CAN NOT change the HV20 mode from DV to HDV, and Final Cut wll not recgnize a DV deck when it’s looking for HDV. Unplug the firewire, fumble through the HV20 menus to change it, plug back in and carry on!

yep. the same in my FCP. Its quite stupid - imovie can capture without problem , FCP gives me “connection problem” information….
