Getting Healthy Again

September 2nd, 2007 · 3 Comments

Wow what a couple of weeks it has been. First the trip out to Phoenix was odd. Then getting sick in Phoenix was worse. Here’s what happened.

I was called out to Phoenix to help a documentary fix their media manager nightmare. After receiving the call I flew out the next day and began my work on Tuesday. I flew back to Greensboro, NC on Sunday believing everything went well and dandy except for the fact that I developed a nasty sore throat and head cold. By Tuesday I was in bed knocked out recovering when I get a frantic call from the director saying the DVD I burned was not working right.

The trouble was downconverting HD to SD. I divulged the information that I didn’t have any experience downconverting HD to an SD DVD. I did some research and felt confident I could do it. Anyway, the DVD worked but the field dominance was wrong during the encoding process to MPEG-2 which made a streak like effect on moving objects close to the camera. Live and learn right?

I apologized for the mess up and asked them to Fed Ex me the file on a hard drive and I would fix it and then send it back overnight. They are on a tight deadline and couldn’t afford the 3 day delay. That was on Tuesday and if everything worked out right it would’ve been back to them by Thursday. Hindsight is a bitch. Although I’m glad they chose to go with a local production company, I was way to sick to work on the project. But the offer was there.

Funny, while I was writing this post I got a call from them and they were in process of building the DVD once again with the correct media file. I walked them through the steps on how to build a simple DVD… a big sigh of relief on both ends. I was thanked for the work I did to help rebuild the final edit and finished film.

Later this week I’ll post a video tutorial on the media management: the correct way to move files within projects so you will not have a nightmare on your hands. This is the second time I’ve stepped into a project to help piece together media files missing. To be honest, that is the hardest thing to do. I have no idea how the previous editor worked and where they save the projects or how they store it.

Also today is the first day where I can honestly say I’m healthy enough to sit at a computer and do some work. The past two weeks wore me out like a shoe on an obese person while walking down a steep hill. I’m now well rested and feeling better again. I have many projects and offers to sort through. Wish me luck and I promise to keep these posts coming.

[...] juice, vitamin C and rest thing. And I’ve stopped shaking hands for 2 weeks. Of course, I’m blaming Andy for being both a carrier and a victim. This entry is filed under health & medicine. You can follow any responses to this entry [...]
