What a find. Directed by Andrew Currie, never heard of him as a filmmaker but will be on the look out for his future films. That got me thinking about other Directors that caught my attention that I never heard of before I saw their work.
Top 5 Directors that caught my attention before they became Hollywood.
#5 - Guy Ritchie, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”…
What a cool way to shoot an action film. He put style and storytelling back in the action genre. Duplicated many times by other directors but never with the same results. Patiently awaiting another stylish hit from him, but hey he is married to Madonna. I’ll give him some time on that.
#4 - Christopher Nolan, “Memento”…
I was lucky to see this mind bending film in the theaters. He got his shot as an A list Hollywood Director with “Batman Begins” and he didn’t disappoint. Finally someone portrayed Batman as he really is.
#3 - Alex Proyas, “Dark City”…
Sure he did “The Crow” which I loved, but if Brandon Lee didn’t get shot and killed during filming, I’m sure it would of flown under the radar.
#2 - Sam Rami, “Evil Dead II”…
This is the greatest B horror movie of all time. But you could see the creativity and skills he had as a storyteller. Having Bruce Campbell as a lead helps to get noticed. He had his A listing with “Spiderman”. I enjoyed the first two but the third is not worth mentioning.
#1 - Peter Jackson, “Dead Alive”…
I remember grabbing this off the shelf with Jarod and looking at the box cover and it saying, “…THE GORIEST FRIGHT FILM OF ALL TIME.” We had to see it, the Unrated version. What we witnessed was the funniest and goriest film I’ve ever seen. I hope one day Peter goes back to his roots to give his now broad audience a dysfunctional viewpoint into his artistic creativity. Lord of the Rings saga put Lucas to shame when he put out episodes 1-3.
