I normally do my taxes but this year is different. I was employed full time, went on unemployment, did freelance gigs (while looking for permanent work), did volunteer work, donated a car, blah blah blah. Now I feel like an adult. No more one W-2 form and I’m done. There are so many forms to fill out. I just can’t do it all. Nor should I. That is why a friend recommended me to see her husband in Clemmons, North Carolina to get my taxes done. I did and what a relief.
As soon as I sat down with Reed Prevatte and he made me feel comfortable by asking me questions, and encouraged me to ask him as many as I needed. I did. I work from home and am trying to incorporate a business and he explained to me that I’m in for some trouble, just kidding. He told me my options and suggested to talk to my partners to make sure we are all on the same wave length. It looks like we will incorporate sometime this summer. Right now I have to focus on contract work.
Reed went above and beyond what any other tax specialist has done for me in the past. The best thing about him were the questions he asked me and showed me what I need to do in order move forward as a business.
I’m sure many of my readers have accountants, but for the ones that do not and are beginning to freelance or work out of the house here are a few tips that I learned that I would like to share with you. If anyone would like to add on to these please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll add to the list.
Keep a record of every purchase
- Computer & Laptop
- Computer Accessories
- Equipment
- Tape & DVD Stock
- Software
- Websites
Learn to keep a legal pad in your car and write down the mileage every time you drive when you are doing something related to your work. Including.
- Meeting clients
- Getting supplies at a store
- Driving to locations to shoot
Also if you work out of your office in your house you can deduct a percentage of these too…
- Rent/Mortgage
- Heating/Gas
- Electric
- Internet
- Phone
I recommend you see a professional they can uncover many of these deductions for you. That is why I am pleased with Reed and his service. He uncovered many avenues that require special attention and I’m glad I did.
With one week away from deadline, if you need an accountant that enjoys his profession here is Reed Prevatte’s information.
