Royalty Free Community

October 23rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

I just created a group over at Vimeo called the Royalty Free Community for filmmakers. My goal is to have a place where filmmakers can go and share footage that they own the rights to so other filmmakers can use it in their projects. How often have you shot some really cool footage and used 3-5 seconds of it? Here is your opportunity to share your cool looking footage with editors and filmmakers alike. The only thing that we ask is if you want to use someone’s footage is to contact the filmmaker and give credit where it is due.

That is all enjoy.

I applied to join the group. When accepted, assuming I am, I hope there well be more information about what rights are granted, is the footage under Creative Commons license, is the sound and/or music included as well? If there are people in the shots, do they have signed releases? Are there signed location releases?

Not everyone will need all this info, but I try to keep these legal factors in mind in case I get a chance to sell something.

For example, I have a friend that was approached by CurrentTV about a short piece he had put up on the web, “American Invasion” (http://tomparish.com/video-projects). He had to go back and get releases from everyone before they would pay. (Fortunately he was able to do this but this might not be possible with footage from this community.)

I got my web site URL wrong. It should be correct now.

Rob I didn’t get an email confirmation to join the group. Of course you will be accepted.

Yes, we use the Creative Commons license but this is for the image only. As far as people are concerned, I was hoping the images would keep people out of the frame unless it is a busy street or a public area. I need to update a few things to the group.. such as you can only use the image not the music involved.

I want people to use the images in their own environments.

    Hay Andy,

Thanks for the response. That all sounds reasonable.

I had just signed up so I’m not surprised you hadn’t gotten an email yet. I was too eager to wait.

How will the members of the group get the clips? Download them from Vimeo or will there be another repository for higher quality/lower compression versions?

Am I asking too many questions?

    Peace,

    Rob:-]
