Naked Words Spoken

April 8th, 2009 · No Comments

revaI’ve gotten many kind words since the passing of my grandmother, Reva Patrick Coon. But none more kind than a friend that lives in Brooklyn. He lost his Grandmother too and had a chance to speak at her memorial. I had that same chance and I want to share it.

I helped with the service and monitored the audio for the program which was beautifully arranged. My father and Aunt put the program together and it rotated between speakers and sweet violin music by Fritz Kreisler, that my Grandma cherished with her heart. She played and taught the violin for years until arthritis took the instrument away from her. But she always had the music in her.

One of my favorite moments of the service was when my mother read a poem in which my brother, Sean wrote.

The other was when my wife, Angela, wearing my Grandmother’s wedding ring, sang A cappella in front of the filled church. It was beautiful.

It was a great day and was so happy to see the family on the West Coast.

I met a kind young writer from the local newspaper and he did a great job reporting the memorial service.

More than 200 people attended the service at Dunsmuir’s United Methodist Church, including Reva’s many former students, family members and friends. Many were local old-timers. They all came to celebrate the grand life of the woman known as “First Lady of Dunsmuir.”
Reva died Feb. 5, 2009 at the age of 104.

In honor of Reva and her Irish heritage, a community choir led by Michael Wright a former student of Reva’s, sang “An Irish Lullaby” and “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” Reva’s “favorite song of all,” according to dear friend Harriet Alto. [more…]

I was sick throughout the entire trip but it didn’t keep me down. I love my family with all my heart and I’m very lucky to be with them. I enjoyed every minute, from the 20 hour travel day to the return trip.

Mount Shasta Volcano in California. I didn’t have time to scout a good location. I had 1 hour to shoot this and this is what I got.

It is and always will be a magical place.
